Personal Profile:
Prof. Akiko Kumada received theB.Eng., M.Eng., and Dr.degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyoin 1994,1996, and 1999, respectively. After working as aresearch associate in the same university from 1999 to 2001. shejoined the Tokyo Electric Power Company as a researcher from2001 to 2003. Since April 2003, she has been with theDepartment of Electrical Engineering of the University ofTokyo and is now a professor of electrical engineering.
Abstract:
My research focuses on high voltage and discharge phenomena. High voltage engineering is a fundamental technology for electric power systems, which are social in frastructure. In recent years, electric power systems are undergoing a period of great technical and institutional change with the massive introduction of renewable energy and distributed powersources, high ageing of existing equipment, and the separation of power transmission anddistribution. We are conducting research related to high-voltage insulation and currentinterruption technology for the development of high-voltageDC transmission networks and the upgrading of existing AC transmission networks.
We use optical technology for discharge measurement, information technology for simulation, and even chemistry to elucidate theproperties of insulating materials and to design materials, We believe that this is a field in which students can learn a wide range of fundamentals and apply them in society.
